From the Port of Livorno

Full day in the Cradle of the Renaissance- Spend the day in Renaissance Florence. Visit the Accademia Gallery to see Michelangelo's Davide or the Uffizi Gallery for Italy's finest collection of Renaissance paintings. Have lunch in a trattoria. Window shop along the Ponte Vecchio... Spend the day as you wish. We'll reserve your museum tickets, upon request. Recommended excursion time: 8am-5pm. From port: 1 hour 30 min.  Option-Visit Florence with a brief afternoon visit to one of the following towns: Fiesole or Pisa.

 

Chianti Villages with a Typical Tuscan Lunch- This morning travel into the Chianti where the green valleys are framed by cypress trees and blue skies. Take a walk in the quaint village of Certaldo Alto with a quick ride on the funicular that takes you into the hilltop village. Next, go for lunch at a nearby restaurant for a taste of traditional Tuscan cuisine. In the afternoon stroll through charming San Gimignano where you can relax in the picturesque town squares, shop for local products, or explore the alleys that lead to spectacular views. Recommended excursion time: 8am-5pm. From port: 1 hour 30 min.

 

Volterra & San Gimignano- This morning you’ll drive south along the coast of Tuscany, arriving in 1.5 hours in Volterra. With origins as an important ancient Etruscan settlement, Volterra sits on a high plateau offering splendid views of the patchworked fields below. Besides having a charming, pedestrian-friendly center, the town houses museums of Etruscan and Roman artifacts, including an ancient Roman theatre. Volterra is also known for its production of fine objects in alabaster. After lunch, continue on to charming San Gimignano for an afternoon stroll. Recommended excursion time: 8 am-5pm. From port: 1 hour 30 min.

 

Full day of Sightseeing in Pisa- Start your day discovering the ruins of ancient Roman ships on a visit to one of Pisa’s most recent excavation sights. Here you’ll see the ancient galleys navigated into the port by the Romans and Etruscans. Afterwards, you’ll go to the center of town for lunch. Then you have the afternoon to visit the Campo dei Miracoli, or Field of Miracles, including Pisa’s beautiful cathedral and baptistry. If time permits, you can also climb the Leaning Tower and stop in the Pinacoteca, the art museum. Recommended excursion time: 8am-5pm. From port: 45 min.

 

Pisa & Lucca- This morning visit charming Lucca, a medieval town completely encircled by its 1500's ramparts, upon which you can walk or bike. Lucca’s quaint, pedestrian-friendly streets make it a fun place to stroll, see its Pisan-Romanesque churches, and visit the piazza which takes the shape of the once Roman amphitheatre. Lucca is the home of opera composer Giacomo Puccini. His birth home, now a museum, is visitable. It's also a great town for boutique shopping along Via Fillungo. After lunch in Lucca, continue on to Pisa to visit its Field of Miracles, including the beautiful Pisan Romanesque cathedral, baptistry, and the Leaning Tower. Recommended excursion time: 8am-5pm. A full day in the Eternal City-Spend the day sightseeing in Rome. We can arrange for a private guide to take you on a specific tour of Rome: Walking tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Campidoglio and the Pantheon; Walking tour of the Vatican museums and St. Peter’s Basilica & Square; Walking tour of Villa Borghese Museum and churches housing works by Bernini; Drive to the ancient Appian Way for a visit to the catacombs. Your driver is at your disposal for the day. Recommended excursion time: 8am-5pm. From port: 1 hour 15 min.

 

Etruscan ruins of Cerveteri & Tarquinia- This morning drive 30 minutes to Tarquinia where you can visit the necropolis, or "city of the dead" where the tombs of the ancient Etruscans were dug into the soft tufa rock with unique frescoes inside each tomb. Then go to the modern town center of Tarquinia to visit the Archaeological Museum, followed by lunch in town. This afternoon walk through the street-lined necropolis of Cerverteri. Dating from the 7th century to the 1st BC, some of the tombs are as big as houses and are decorated with relief sculptures. No Mondays or holidays. Recommended excursion time: 8am-5pm. From port: 45 min.

 

Ostia Antica & lunch in Rome- Spend the morning exploring the town that used to be a main ancient Roman port. Ostia Antica now lies about 3 miles inland, and its ruins give insight into the daily life of ancient Romans. After the visit, go to the center of Rome for lunch and leisure time. Recommended excursion time: 8 am-2 pm. One-way drive from port: 1 hour

 

Medieval Viterbo & Villa Lante or Park of Bomarzo- This morning visit the medieval town of Viterbo. Have lunch and stroll through the town’s main squares, a time line of buildings and churches that date from the Romanesque 12th century to the Renaissance 15th century. Afterwards, stop for a visit in Villa Lante to see the Renaissance gardens and fountains or to Bomarzo to visit the park filled with stone carvings of mythical figures and allegorical monsters inspired by the distorted characteristics of the Mannerist period of art. Villa Lante- No Mondays. Recommended excursion time: 8am-5pm. From port: 1 hour 45 minutes.

 

Montefiascone on Lake Bolsena & Civita di Bagnoregio - Spend the morning in this charming town that overlooks a lake, a medieval castle and the surrounding countryside. The town, situated on a defunct volcanic crater and overlooking Lake Bolsena, boasts the second largest dome on its cathedral (2nd to St. Peter’s in Rome). Afterwards, take a walk through the “dead city” of Civita di Bagnoregio. Recommended excursion time: 8am-5pm. From port: 1 hour 30 minutes.
